Local Guide

If you’re hoping to hit all the hot spots in Grand Junction, we sure hope you’re planning for an extended stay, because there’s a lot of stuff to do. It’s difficult for us to pick some of our favorites, but these are the locations and activities that we believe you shouldn’t leave town without checking out.

Historic Downtown
If you’re visiting Grand Junction and looking for somewhere to go, the first thing you should do is head to the downtown area. This vibrant area has a plethora of shops and restaurants, and is dotted with unique sculptures and, of course, an awesome backdrop that typically consists of a bright blue sky dotted with fluffy clouds. You could literally spend your entire day looking around the historic downtown area and still not see everything. We suggest that you start early, take advantage of the free parking all around you, and hit as many shops, galleries, and eateries as you can.

Grand Mesa
When you visit the great state of Colorado, you’ll notice that the word “gorgeous” comes up a lot. The Grand Mesa should give you a great indication as to why this is. The beauty of this area must be seen up-close to truly appreciated, from the beauty of the birch forest to the collection of lakes that you can even see from the road. How you enjoy the Grand Mesa is up to you — either treat it as a scenic drive for you and your family, or make multiple stops along the way to get some quick photos of spectacular views. The choice is yours.

Hiking, Biking, Rafting, Fishing, Bird Watching, and More
While it’s true that we’ve been going on and on about the beautiful state of Colorado, it’s absolutely true — and that means you should get outside and enjoy everything that the landscape has to offer. Grand Junction is full of trails made for hiking and mountain biking, and if you want to stop and do some bird watching, we can’t imagine a more perfect way to spend an afternoon. And for a little fun with the water, you can either spend the day whitewater rafting on the Colorado River or grab your gear and relax as you catch some fish for dinner. No matter what you like to do outdoors, there’s a good chance you’ll find it here.

John McConnell Math and Science Center
The greatest gift that we can give our children, excluding love, is an education. That’s why the Math and Science Center is a must-see for anyone taking a vacation with little ones… and, heck, the parents will get a kick out of it, too! The facility is filled with multiple hands-on displays that provide details and fun facts about how nature works, the function and design of weather, and other such things that everyone should learn about. Take your children here for a couple of hours and we guarantee you won’t regret it.

Museum of the West
Although this museum isn’t very big, you’ll be surprised at everything they manage to fit into a small area. This is a perfect way to learn some things about the area’s history, with a great collection of display items. You’ll see many types of guns, armor, pottery, vehicles, and other such items that will keep you engaged as you make your way around. If you decide to check it out, just make sure that you don’t leave without climbing the tower to the observation deck for some photo opportunities.
